Automating the Insert Symbols Command in Word PDF Print E-mail

There are times when you need to repeatedly insert a symbol in Word. For example, when writing about numbers, you may need to distinguish between the letter O and the number 0. Using a slashed zero can help.

Slashed Zero

To Word the slashed zero is a symbol that can be inserted from the Symbols dialog box. If you use that symbol a lot the process can be quite tedious and time-consuming. Here is a tip to streamline the process.

Add a symbol to AutoCorrect

  1. Place your insertion point where you want the first symbol to go.
  2. Click on Insert, Symbol... on the menu.
  3. Select the appropriate symbol in the Symbol box.

  4. You can click the Insert button and it will insert the selected symbol at the insertion point each time you click the button.
  5. To automate the process, click the AutoCorrect... button.
  6. In the AutoCorrect box, the selected symbol will be inserted into the Insert With field.
  7. Type a keystroke that you will remember to trigger the AutoCorrect to replace with the symbol. (In this case i chose a slash and zero.)

  8. Click the Add button and OK.
  9. Now, back in the document, type the keystroke that you chose.
