Renaming & Formatting Excel Sheet Tabs PDF Print E-mail

In an Excel workbook with multiple sheets, it is helpful to have meaningful names and formatting on the sheet tabs.

 Rename Excel Sheet Tabs

Do one of the following: 

  • Double-click on the sheet tab to rename
  • In Excel 2003: On the menu choose, Format, Sheet, Rename
  • Right-click on the sheet tab to rename

  1. The sheet tab name will be highlighted.

      Rename Excel Sheet
  2. Type the new desired name.
  3. Press ENTER

Change Excel Sheet Tab Color

  1. Right-click on the desired tab.
  2. Choose Tab Color...
  3. In the Format Tab Color box, choose the desired color.

When deselected, the sheet tab will be the color chosen.

When selected, the sheet tab will have an underline in the color chosen.

Excel Sheet Tab Font Size- Windows XP

You can change the size of the tabs, and their font by making some changes in your system settings. Beware, however, because this setting will affect the size of all of your scrollbars in all applications.

  1. Minimize Excel and go to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the desktop and choose Properties.

  3. In the Display Properties window, click on the Appearance Tab.

  4. Click on the Advanced button.
  5. In the Advanced Properties window, choose Scrollbars from the Item drop-list.

  6. Change the size number bigger or smaller as desired. The preview window will show you the changes.
  7. Click OK, twice.
  8. The screen will take a few seconds to adjust.
