Controlling Excel Cell Movement When Pressing ENTER PDF Print E-mail
When you enter a value in Excel by pressing ENTER the active cell is moved to the cell below your entered value. At times this movement is not very productive. You can control this cell movement so that you can stay in the cell or move other directions.

Change Active Cell Movement After ENTER

Excel 2003

  1. Click on the Tools menu and choose Options
  2. Click on the Edit Tab.

  3. To set your active cell to stay in the cell when you press Enter, uncheck the “move selection after Enter” box.

    To set your active cell to move in a different direction when you press Enter, leave the box checked and choose the desired direction from the drop-list.

  4. Click OK.
  5. The next time that you enter a formula and press ENTER, the active cell will move (or not move) in the direction that you specified.

Excel 2007

  1. Click on the Office Button and click the Excel Options button.

  2. Click on the Advanced Tab on the left of the Excel Options dialog box.

  3. In the first section (Edit), set your active cell to stay in the cell when you press Enter, by unchecking the “move selection after Enter” box.

    To set your active cell to move in a different direction when you press Enter, leave the box checked and choose the desired direction from the drop-list.

  4. Click OK.
  5. The next time that you enter a formula and press ENTER, the active cell will move (or not move) in the direction that you specified.
